The Washington Collection for Knoll, Knoll Prism™ lounge furniture by Adjaye Associates
Designed by Adjaye Associates, the collection translates an architectural vision into accessible design for the home, the Prism series explores the interplay of light and form to produce multifaceted, sculptural pieces, which use geometry to occupy space. Consisting of a swiveling lounge chair, ottoman and side table, each piece uses a base of a glossy core laminate shell, and comes in three colors: red, white or black. The side table is available in five marble top finishes: arabescato, calacutta, nero, marquina and verdi alpi.
While the formal language is shared with the practice’s architectural work, the design of the suite presented the opportunity to manipulate materials, silhouettes and forms as part of a common line of inquiry. Prism therefore draws on David Adjaye’s architectural vocabulary – adapted for the human scale. The sculptural form of the furniture was developed through an investigation into the themes of mass and heft. The lounge chair unexpectedly has a twisting function, which inevitably brings a sense of lightness to the heavy form. Conceived as a collective entity, Prism is also a play on the idea of permanence and history versus modernity.
